When I was growing up, I often felt very isolated and alone.  I was very sensitive, and didn’t always feel like I had someone in my life to turn to for help with the brewing cauldron of emotions I was feeling.

I grew up during the 60’s and 70’s.  I am sure some of my own personal turmoil was a reflection of the turmoil felt around the world.  There were several hard-felt assassinations, an energy crisis, the Viet Nam war dragged on, racial tensions were escalating, a president was impeached, and nearly all people were being confronted with some sort of revolution ~ whether personally, or globally on the daily news.

Early on, I learned to find solace in nature.  I befriended the trees.  Remember the Lorax?

Earth Girl Blossoms

Not so long ago, I was walking in the field next to our apartment with my husband Don, pondering who I really was, what I represented, and how I can best express myself as joyously as possible, while inspiring others.

You would think I was in college trying to decide what to be ‘when I grew up.’  In fact, at times, I didn’t always feel all that ‘grown up.’

“The longest journey we can take is from our head’s to our hearts.” ~Dan Millman

One day, while getting a hypnotherapy session with my teacher, (I’m a certified clinical hypnotherapist), I mentioned having recently come up with the moniker of ‘Earth Girl’  (with Don’s help) and had a spontaneous ‘thought’ to create children’s books about her.

Actually, at first my husband and I came up with Earth Goddess as my ‘handle’ to create an identity with which to ‘put myself out there.’  But when he suggested Earth Girl instead, it all hit home.  That was it.  I am she, and she is me, and we are one. (That sounded a bit like a Beetle’s song!)

Linda, my hypno teacher, immediately got chills up her arm and loved the idea.  And this is what she observed, paraphrased:

“It’s almost as if you operate at a much slower pace than everyone else, and if you could learn to honor  that, you could teach others how to slow down as well.”

Hearing that tugged at my heart, and sent shivers up my arms.  I never thought myself to be slower paced.  I’m an Aries after all, with Gemini rising.  That makes me a quick thinker and talker.  Yet, in the biggest way possible, it was the truth.  I need a lot of down time.  I could spend hours lying on the earth daydreaming, reading, journaling, or playing with my cat.

And so, Earth Girl began to blossom within my heart, and I couldn’t get her off my mind.

Earth girl speaks to the inner child within all of us.  That part of us that ‘just knows’ what we know to be true for ourselves, prior to being ‘taught’ other wise.

My ‘earth girl’ is the tree-hugging nature lover who still remembers her roots, and has a deep reverence for earth, and all her beautiful creatures.  She lives for enchanted moments ~ those special, mystical and spontaneous occurrences that light us up inside, and awaken all of our senses.

She has a greater sense of balance too.  She does as she feels, guided more by her body and heart than her mind.  Something we’ve all been programmed to do the other way around.

I have been through a lot of challenges in my life.  I have also had a lot of health issues.  Eating a healthy plant based diet centered on fresh whole greens, grains, beans, fruits, and other whole plant foods, and eliminating animal foods and chemicals from my life (as much as possible) has helped me to make great improvements in my health, my energy and my moods.

Eating a healthy vegan diet and practicing yoga have helped me feel more aligned physically, and more in sync with my core values and sense of purpose.  How I feel now compared to when I was still eating an animal centered diet is beyond comparison.  It’s priceless.

To feel our best, and live in accord with what is best for our mind, body, and spirit to thrive, we need to live more harmoniously with nature’s rhythms.  And we need to make certain lifestyle habits like eating healthy food, having fun, fitness, connecting, slowing down, play, and learning to listen to and trust our heart more of a priority.

Thankfully, Earth Girl emerged to remind me that it is okay to slow down.  And laugh more.   In fact, it is essential.

This blog is my journey of breaking free from all that has prevented my inner magical, nature loving Earth Girl from having her day in the sun.  It’s time to be out there in the world in a way that is comfortable to me, while honoring all of my EG ways.

I hope what I share here can help you do the same.  The world needs us all to awaken and shine.  Or at least enough of us to shed light on how out of balance we are living, and nudge us back on the path to making that long journey, from our heads back to our hearts.
